About Bobcat

Bobcat History

Near Rothsay, Minnesota, in the 1950s, Louis and Cyril Keller ran Keller Welding and Repair. A local turkey farmer named Eddie Velo told the Kellers in 1956 that he needed a device that was both lightweight and compact enough to fit within a pole barn. On February 4, 1957, the brothers presented Velo with a compact, three-wheeled design with a belt-driven transmission. After learning about problems with the belt-driven transmission from Velo, who gave the Kellers complete access to his operations, the Kellers created and patented a more durable clutch-based transmission system in 1958. The Melroe M60 loader was built around the new transmission.

The Melroe Manufacturing Company, situated in Gwinner, North Dakota, invited the Kellers to exhibit at the 1958 Minnesota State Fair after receiving a marketing suggestion from the Kellers' uncle, an equipment salesman for the company. In 1960, Melroe released the four-wheeled M400 model "Skid-Steer Loader," and in 1962, the 440 model loader, the company started using the trade name "Bobcat" for similar goods. During a journey between Minneapolis and Gwinner, Les Melroe and advertising agent Lynn Bickett were swapping name suggestions when they decided on the name "Bobcat". The phrase "tough, swift, and agile" was created by Bickett and Sylvan Melroe and used to promote the first loaders.

Clark Equipment Company acquired Melroe Manufacturing Company in 1969. Clark Equipment Company later acquired Ingersoll-Rand in 1995. Along with the rest of its construction equipment company, Ingersoll-Rand sold Clark Equipment Company to the Doosan Group of South Korea in 2007 for US$4.9 billion. The Bobcat Company now conducts business as The Clark Equipment Company. The name "Bobcat" is a registered trademark of Bobcat Company.

A seven-year partnership between Doosan and Doosan Bobcat came to an end on January 1 when they were split up into separate businesses.

Hyundai Heavy Industries purchased Doosan Infracore in July 2021 for about $722.45 million in exchange for a 30% controlling stake in the business. Doosan Infracore will join the newly formed Hyundai Genuine group as a subsidiary.
